This year, every Quote and Video in the Primary and Secondary First Five editions includes prompting questions designed to help you continue the conversation.
Go Beyond Watching and Reading
It can be easy to display a quote, play a video, and move on with the day. Prompting questions help students pause and think more deeply about what they have just seen or heard.
These questions encourage students to:
- Reflect on the message
- Connect it to their own experiences
- Consider another person’s perspective
- Examine their choices, values, and reactions
- Share ideas and learn from one another
The goal is not to find one correct answer. It is to create space for reflection, introspection, and meaningful classroom conversation.
Ready When You Need Them
The prompting questions are already included beneath every Quote and Video in the Primary and Secondary editions. There is nothing extra to prepare, download, or search for.
You can choose one question for a quick partner discussion, invite students to respond as a class, or allow time for quiet reflection or journaling.
Some days, the conversation may last only a minute or two. Other days, a question may lead your class somewhere unexpected and important.

The First Five is designed to help educators build connection with students in a way that feels manageable during a busy school day.
