The First Five has always given you ready-to-use activities for building connection, encouraging conversation, and starting the day with purpose.
Now, every daily activity includes a new row of icons designed to enhance the First Five and help you make each activity even more engaging.
Look above any component in the Junior, Primary, or Secondary edition, and you will find quick ways to involve students, add interaction, and adapt the activity for your classroom.
Here is what each icon does, listed from left to right:
Name Picker
Choose a student at random without leaving the First Five. You can also create saved class lists, making it easy to involve more voices throughout the activity.
Draw on This
Write, circle, underline, or draw directly over an activity image. Use it to highlight important details, model a response, collect ideas, or make the activity more interactive on your classroom display.
Randomizers
Add an element of surprise with a Dice Roll, Coin Flip, Spinner, or Number Generator. Dice and Coin Flip are free for everyone, while Spinner and Number are included with First Five Plus.
Try This
Not sure how to introduce an activity or take it a little further? Select Try This for a practical idea connected to that component. The suggestions continue advancing, giving you fresh ways to use the First Five over time.
Crown Your Favorite
Show some love to the activity your class enjoyed most. Crown your favorite, then check the Today’s Most Loved board at the bottom of the edition to see which activities other educators across the world are choosing.
Spanish Flip
Select the Spanish Flip icon to change one individual activity into Spanish without switching the rest of the edition. It is a quick way to make a specific question, quote, video, or activity more accessible.
Swap It Out
An activity not quite right for your class today? Swap it for another option. Free users receive one swap per activity, while First Five Plus members can swap activities without limits.
Timer
Start a countdown directly from the activity. On desktop, the timer follows you as you scroll, changes color as time runs down, and lets your class know when time is up.
Focus Mode
Enlarge and isolate one activity on your classroom screen. Focus Mode removes distractions and makes it easier for everyone in the room to see the activity you are using.
You do not need to use every icon every day. Each one is there to help you personalize the First Five, increase participation, and make the experience more engaging for your class.
Open today’s First Five, choose an activity, and explore the icons above it. You may discover a whole new way to bring the First Five to life.

Many of the new icons are available free for everyone, while First Five Plus unlocks even more flexibility, including unlimited activity swaps, additional randomizers, and expanded saved class lists.
