Meet The First Five Junior: Built for Our Littlest Learners

While many of our connection activities work beautifully across grade levels, they aren’t always the right fit for our littlest learners. For PreK, Kindergarten, and early 1st grade students, too many choices or too-big concepts can get in the way of making a meaningful connection.

We noticed it firsthand while supporting classrooms in the districts we train and coach. As we watched amazing early childhood educators adapt and simplify activities in real time, we knew it was time to create something made just for them.

So we brought together a team of thoughtful, experienced educators and asked: What could the First Five look like if it were truly built for the youngest kids in the building?

The result? The First Five Junior.

This new edition keeps the same spirit and simplicity of the First Five, but with intentional tweaks and additions tailored to early childhood classrooms. One of our favorite features is the new Feelings activities, placed right after Check-Ins. Each day includes a cartoon or real person expressing an emotion, paired with short reflection questions to help students identify feelings and build emotional vocabulary.

This wasn’t just about making things easier to read. It was about aligning with what early childhood educators are already working hard to teach. The thinktank of educators who helped shape this edition dug deep into developmental goals and core competencies, making sure each activity supports those foundational skills.

Whether you teach 1st grade, Kinder, PreK, run a daycare, or spend your days with toddlers, we hope you find something valuable in the First Five Junior.

We’d love to hear your feedback and ideas as we continue to grow this new edition. Let us know what’s working, what your students love, and what you’d like to see next.
