Horse math activity

Time: 1–5 minutes
Preparation: None. Just space to stomp and clap

This simple activity gets students moving while practicing quick mental math.

Here’s how it works

  1. Explain Horse Math.
Share with students: “Today we are going to count like horses, and horses only count using 1s and 5s! Our goal is to see how fast we can do Horse Math.”
  2. Teach the movements:
    • 1 Clap = 1
    • 1 Stomp = 5
  3. Give a practice round or two:
    • Example: If you say 5, students stomp 1 time (1 stomp x 5 = 5) or clap 5 times (5 claps x 1 = 5)
    • Example: If you say 11, students stomp 2 times (10) and clap 1 time (10 + 1 = 11) or clap 11 times (11 x 1 = 11)
    • Remember the goal is to see how fast Horse Math can be done.
  4. Let the game begin.
When the students are ready, have them stand up. Say any number you choose to start with. Students must stomp for 5s and clap for 1s to show the total. Consider using visuals for students to see as well.
  5. Increase the challenge.
Start small and increase to larger numbers, gradually call numbers out faster, or throw numbers out randomly.
  6. Optional fun twists:
    • Last person still counting sits down each round
    • Students “neigh” like a horse after solving each round
    • Let a student be the number caller
