Before We All Pretend We Are Not Tired on Monday

Hey. Doug Overton here.

It’s Friday, which means two things are true at the same time. You are thinking about the weekend, and you are already thinking about how tired you might be on Monday.

Because it’s Super Bowl weekend.

This year it’s Seahawks vs Patriots, which feels like one of those games people will argue about no matter what happens. And if football is not your thing, no worries. Bad Bunny is doing the halftime show, so at some point your students will be talking about that whether you watched it or not.

Here’s the honest truth. Super Bowl Sunday for teachers is not really about the game. It’s about staying up later than you meant to. Eating snacks that absolutely count as dinner. Laughing at commercials you will reference with your students for the next week. And then waking up Monday morning and immediately questioning your life choices.

That part is universal.

Some of you will watch every minute. Some of you will show up for halftime and commercials only. Some of you will skip the whole thing and still be tired Monday anyway, which feels unfair but happens.

And Monday at school will be exactly what you expect. Kids buzzing. Kids exhausted. Kids arguing about things you did not notice at all. And teachers doing that quiet mental math of coffee consumed versus patience remaining.

So here’s my Friday message. Enjoy the weekend. However that looks for you. Do not overthink it. Do not plan for Monday yet. You will handle Monday the same way you always do, by showing up, connecting with kids, and figuring it out as you go.

For now, it’s Friday. That matters.

Enjoy the game, the halftime show, or just the snacks.
