Under the surface activity

As educators, we are used to focusing on academics and behavior. We track progress, manage classrooms, and try to meet the needs we can see. But anyone who works in schools knows that learning is influenced by much more than what shows up on an assignment or in a data point.

Every member of a school community, including students, colleagues, and even ourselves, may be carrying challenges that stay under the surface. A student dealing with stress at home. A colleague navigating personal hardship. Quiet experiences that shape how people show up each day.

This is where a whole-child MTSS approach begins, not with interventions, but with awareness and connection. Foundational Tier 1 practices that center relationships, belonging, and emotional safety help create classrooms where students feel supported before challenges escalate.

That is why moments of connection matter. Small, intentional check-ins at the start of class can make a real difference. Tools like The First Five support this foundational Tier 1 work by creating space for students to be seen as people first, not just learners. A question, a check-in, or a moment of reflection can open the door to understanding before instruction even begins.

We may not know the full story behind someone’s behavior, but we can choose how we respond. A kind word. A listening ear. A bit of patience. These simple actions strengthen relationships and support the whole child in ways that data alone cannot capture.

As educators, we lead not only through what we teach, but through how we show up for others. When empathy and connection are embedded into everyday classroom routines, they become powerful Tier 1 supports within a whole-child MTSS framework.

Behind every face in the hallway, there may be an untold story. The way we begin each day can help make room for it.
