Emotions: Notice them, Name them, Navigate them.

The first step in helping students understand their emotions, and the emotions of others, is learning to notice them. That takes intentionality. Emotions show up in big and small ways, both positive and challenging, and students need opportunities to recognize them as they happen.

The First Five creates space for that awareness. It draws attention to how we are feeling while also encouraging students to observe and empathize with how others are feeling, whether it is classmates or characters within the activities.

Once emotions are noticed, components like check-ins and mindfulness help students begin to name what they are feeling. But even when students can notice and name an emotion, they are often left wondering, “now what?”

The First Five helps open that door by creating opportunities to navigate emotions through positivity, mindful coping strategies, and exposure to stories and perspectives through quotes and videos.

Emotions can be challenging, even for adults. But when we give students the tools, space, and support to work through them together, we help them build skills they will carry far beyond the classroom.

So let’s help students not only notice and name their emotions, but begin to navigate them with confidence.
