First Five Strategy: Quote Reflection Journal

Some quotes stick with us for a reason.

Instead of just reading them and moving on, give students a space to pause, think, and make meaning.

Encourage your students to keep a simple quote reflection journal.

After sharing a quote from the First Five, give students a minute or two to write about what stood out to them and why. There’s no right or wrong answer, just their thinking.

Over time, this becomes more than just a quick activity.

Students begin to:

Make connections to their own experiences
Think more deeply about ideas and perspectives
Build self-awareness around what matters to them

You can also invite students to add quotes they come across outside the classroom, from social media, books, songs, or videos. It gives them ownership and keeps the activity relevant to their world.

It’s a simple routine that builds reflection, voice, and meaning over time.
